For nearly twenty years, award winning, Performance Poet, motivational speaker and author , Ge'ylah Jones has entertained college and university communities nationwide with the dynamic one woman show, Power of the Tongue. Her amazing performance of popular African American poetry within the show has moved many renowned writers to applause her "flawless" ability to capture the meaning of their work(s).
THE SECRET OF HER SUCCESS
Ge'ylah began reciting poetry at the ripe age of five. This is evidenced by her memorized repertoire which stands at more than fifty poems, prose pieces and soliloquies. The naturally gifted thespian and Performance Poet has often been refereed to as a "Poetic Encyclopedia'. With a performance history that has enabled her to participate in events along with poetic giants: Maya Angelou, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Haki Madhubuti, the late, Gwendolyn Brooks and Margaret Walker Alexander, whose works she often recites, Ge'ylah believes that one of her life's purposes is to increase the awareness of classic text book literature.
As a keynote and workshop presenter, she has received numerous awards and commendations, including being presented with the the Key to the City and a "Ge'ylah Jones Day" in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. In recognition of her endless efforts to preserve the oral tradition she is the recipient of the Cultural Citizens Foundation " Trophy of Honor". Recently, the native Chicagoan served as Artist in Residence at Texas A & M University. The commission was sponsored by the Dept. of African Studies and the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.
Having produced, performed in and directed hundreds of presentations designed to empower individuals, she has been billed with individuals such as Dr. Molefi Asante, Hasani Pettiford, Susan L. Taylor.
When asked, she will unequivocally share that working with youth and watching them transform on stage is her passion. She is the force behind Power of the Tongue Youth Troupes, Power of the Tongue, Inc.; and Future Orators Reveal Exquisite Natural Skill In Competitive Speaking (F.O.R.E.N.S.I.C.S) - a speech and drama program for youth.
She is the author of "The Day My Voice Comes Out", "The Power of Performance", "The Power of the Tongue Verses For Daily Living" and "A Weight Lifted: 101 Ways to Boost Your Self Esteem". In 2012 she introduced her greatest work yet, "Black History Comes To Life" - a performance agency that specializes in performances, one person shows and reenactments of African American History Makers.
